Upcoming Trends of Stem Cell Therapy in Pain Management

On January 18, 2025, I had the distinct privilege of attending the International Conference on Upcoming Trends of Stem Cell Therapy in Pain Management alongside my esteemed colleagues, Dr. Vijay Krishna and Dr. Ram Kumar.

This groundbreaking initiative was collaboratively organized by the Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education (NICHE) – Department of Allied Health Sciences, the NIMS Centre for Genomic Medicine, NIMS Medicity, and the Indian Society for the Study of Pain (ISSP). Set against the backdrop of the vibrant NIMS Medicity campus, the event brought together leading global minds to discuss innovative, regenerative approaches to pain management.

A Stellar Inaugural Session

The conference commenced with an engaging welcome address by Dr. Manju Thampi, Medical Administrator at NIMS Medicity. The session was deeply honored by the presence of our chief guests: Dr. M.V. Pillai, Clinical Professor at the Sydney Kimmel College of Thomas Jefferson University, USA, and Dr. Sreejith, President of IMA Trivandrum. Their opening remarks set a forward-looking tone, emphasizing the critical transition from traditional pain management to advanced regenerative medicine.

Cutting-Edge Plenary Talks

The core of the conference featured brilliant plenary sessions delivered by pioneers in the field. The scientific presentations went deep into both the clinical and molecular mechanics of pain management and cellular regeneration:

  • Dr. Sairam Atluri (Founder, Stem Cures USA) shared profound insights into clinical applications of regenerative medicine, detailing how stem cell infusions, exosomes, and Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) work synergistically to stimulate native stem cells and promote organ regeneration.
  • Dr. Satish Khurana (Associate Professor, IISER Trivandrum) provided a fascinating molecular perspective. His presentation featured in-depth proteomic analyses confirming the close interaction between Hematopoietic Stem Cells (HSCs) and myofibroblasts, as well as illuminating data on the decreased accumulation of double-strand DNA breaks in aged HSCs.
  • Dr. Aneesh Nair (Principal Scientist, NIMS Centre for Genomic Medicine) bridged the gap between genetics and pain management. He presented compelling data on Pharmacogenomics (PGx), specifically explaining how analyzing the CYP2D6 gene can enable highly personalized and safer opioid dosing for patients.
  • Dr. Aravinthan Mammalan (Anesthesiology and Critical Care, NIMS Medicity) discussed the practical implementation of these cellular therapies in acute and critical care settings.

Expert Panel Discussion

Following the presentations, a dynamic panel of medical experts discussed the translation of these therapies from the lab to routine clinical practice. The esteemed panelists included:

  • Mr. M.S. Faisal Khan, Managing Director, NIMS Medicity
  • Dr. Shafeeq Salim, Clinical Hematologist & Hon. Senior Lecturer, University of Birmingham, UK
  • Dr. Ansar Showkath Ali, Associate Professor of Anaesthesiology, Government Medical College, Trivandrum
  • Dr. Ansar A.M., Anaesthesiologist and Pain Medicine Specialist
  • Dr. Lekshmi Mohan, Associate Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Government Medical College, Trivandrum
  • Dr. Lekshmi Nair, Consultant and Head of Medical Genomics, NIMS Medicity

The panel fielded engaging questions, exploring the multifaceted challenges and incredible potential of integrating stem cell therapy and genomic medicine into multidisciplinary pain management.

Conclusion and Takeaways

The event formally concluded with a heartfelt Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Arockia Selva Saroja, Head of the Department of Allied Health Sciences at NICHE.

For Dr. Vijay Krishna, Dr. Ram Kumar, and myself, this conference was a highly enriching experience. Witnessing the intersection of genomic medicine, precision pharmacology, and stem cell therapy highlighted a paradigm shift in how we approach chronic and acute pain. We left the NIMS Medicity campus equipped with cutting-edge knowledge that we are excited to explore and integrate into our own clinical and research endeavors.

A huge congratulations to the NICHE community and NIMS Medicity for hosting such a transformative and flawlessly executed medical conference!
